Handmade jewelry, created from repurposed and "upcycled" game pieces. Barrettes made from Scrabble tiles, necklaces made from dice, badges made from dominos, earrings from Legos, and a completely interactive charm bracelet station!
A life-long resident of the artistically fertile Kansas City area, creative compulsions strike Honeysuckle Rose Creations founder and principal designer Alexis Hejna with all the natural-born urgency of a lightning bolt rushing to a tree -- and with about the same measure of vibrant results.
Call it equal parts “nature” and “nurture”. Her father, a respected professional photographer, imbued his daughter with both an instinctive and well-honed touch for striking composition. Her mother, a beloved long-time KC-metro radio personality, taught her a sly, colorful wit that’s as ever-present in her convention-table banter with HSR fans as it is a subtle thread woven into her geek-chic manifestations.
After a collegiate odyssey that spirited her from the University of Missouri-Columbia to Northwest Missouri State University -- and from a semester absorbing London and another as a Los Angeles entertainment-industry intern -- she graduated with a NWMSU Bachelor’s of Science in Broadcasting degree with a Visual Journalism minor in 2006, and then leapt into satisfying graphic design positions with KCTV 5 and Metro Sports while pursuing private artistic explorations in photography, creating unique digitally composed visions through Adobe Photoshop, and following in her father’s footsteps as an adept wedding photographer.
After parting ways amicably with both KC television stations, she dove immediately and headlong into her art. In 2011, she indulged in her first classes creating handmade pendants, keychains and earrings -- at first, strictly as molded-with-love gifts for family and friends -- before stumbling upon the next deep channel into which she could poor her creativity: “up-cycling.”
Long magnetized by geeky and imaginative art and other creations -- she’s a bona fide and undisputed champion of Looney Tunes lore, devout Disney disciple, comic enthusiast and Tim Burton true-believer, to name just a few nerdy fascinations -- she set out to compose tributes to geeky kitsch and beloved fandoms from Game of Thrones to Pokemon from found media. Put a collectible card in her hands, and watch her weave a stylishly unique barrette. If you have a Scrabble tile, she has a pendant in the making that flies your nerd-flag high….er, on your neck.
When she isn’t traveling hither and yon to sci-fi, anime and miscellaneous-fandom cons throughout the Midwest, she can be found mothering HSR mascot/lead minion/diabolical cocker-spaniel genius Toby, ministering the Gospel of the Bronies, or cataloguing the Universe’s greatest assembly of Beatles knowledge.
